Asda has made massive changes to the way that its rewards scheme works and has left a number of customers uneasy.
That’s because it affects the way that Blue Light Card holders earn money for their reward cash pot on certain purchases.
Blue Light Cards are given to emergency service workers, with some retailers offering as much as 30% off products and services. Asda previously allowed Blue Light Card holders to receive 10% off fresh food using the Asda Rewards app, but as of today, the discount has been halved.
And shoppers rushed to social media to share their disappointment, with one writing: “Such a shame! I don’t think it will be worth going to Asda over Aldi,” while another vented: “No point going Asda anymore.” A third added: “It’s been great while it lasted… 5% is better than nothing,” while a further user voiced: “People complaining about something they get for free will always baffle me…”
The Mirror reports that it comes as the second big change Asda has made for Blue Light Card holders in the space of a year, reducing the scope of the scheme last June so fewer items were eligible for discount. Shoppers could previously earn an extra 10% on their cashpots when purchasing homewares, health and beauty, baby items, outdoor goods, toys, laundry and pet products.
But this was slashed to fresh food only as of June 2023. Shoppers using the rewards scheme earn Asda Pounds for completing timed missions in-store, like spending a certain amount of fruit and veg.
An Asda spokesperson said: “Asda has worked with Blue Light Card since 2022 and we have saved blue light workers millions on their shopping in that time. We’re now introducing new and exclusive ways for card holders to boost their Asda Rewards Cashpots, as well as offering 5% back in Cashpots on fresh food purchases.”
