Baby Reindeer’s ‘real-life Martha’ hits back at show as she says ‘I’m the victim here’

Netflix recently released a new original series that everyone is talking about: Baby Reindeer. Based on a true story, it follows comedian and performer Richard Gadd’s experience with a female stalker in his 20s – named Martha in the show – and how the trauma impacted his life.

Now, the person accused of being the ‘real life’ Martha by internet sleuths has reportedly spoken out, declaring that she is the real ‘victim’.

Speaking to the Daily Record, the woman, who is Scottish but now lives in London, says she has been bombarded with death threats, and is now the one being stalked.

“I’m the victim here, not Richard Gadd. I’ve had death threats as a result of his show despite the fact that a lot of the things he claimed are just not true. Someone online said, ‘If I find you I will kill you’. A guy in North Carolina said that he and other people were going to stalk me like I am supposed to have stalked Gadd,” she told the outlet.

The woman then noted how the show has led to her not being able to sleep, with her claiming that she only managed to get two hours shut eye one night because she was worried that the threats might come true.

She then reeled off her own version of events, sharing that she was “in Richard Gadd’s company on occasions but didn’t stalk him like he claims.” Rather, the woman, who is said to be middle aged with a law degree from Aberdeen University, insisted that Gadd’s re-telling is an intrusion of her privacy. She also noted that she has not seen Richard – who has recently issued a plea to fans looking for ‘Martha’ – in 12 years.

OK! has reached out to Richard for comment.

Despite having not seen Baby Reindeer, the woman revealed that she has seen and heard various things about it, including that she read Richard had originally written the show for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival years ago.

“I thought, ‘Oh my God’. This weekend I Googled and stories about Richard Gadd and Baby Reindeer were all over the place in flashing lights. I had been aware four or five years ago about him calling the character Martha and I saw the photo of the actress. I don’t think I look like that woman actress playing Martha,” she recalled.

Following this, the woman likened the situation to Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, explaining that she feels like she’s being persecuted and is being attacked on the internet.
