The reopening of the long-closed Turkish Baths in Newcastle brings with it the opportunity to soak up a city tradition as well as explore top-of-the-range new facilities which include a shower with a difference.
A new ‘shower experience’, with colour-changing lights, is available, offering a mood-enhancing indulgence with tropical rain, cold fog and Caribbean storm settings and it is just one of the treats in store at the revamped 1927 facilities. Situated in the basement of The City Baths in Northumberland Road, and part of thesite’s multi-million-pound restoration, the Turkish Baths are now back in action – and there’s still more to come.
Raven Brown, its spa operations manager, gave a tour of the facilities, run by Fusion Lifestyle, showing off the restoration which has retained traditional features such as its 1920s wood features and restored its iconic glass ceiling dome to former glory. Music there now sets the mood for what Raven says is “an amazing experience” for visitors, which invites them to explore a relaxation area and three successive heated chambers, which increase in temperature along the route.
There are cold water bucket showers for the hardy, alongside the experience shower which Raven says is a must-try. And more treats await, with a spa still to open, which will offer the likes of cold body scrubs, plus a steam room to come.
The Newcastle facilities are among just seven historic Turkish baths in operation in the UK. The relaunch follows on from the reopening of the building’s main City Pool in January 2020, following its own revamp.
