Alan Shearer spots ‘raging’ Pep Guardiola moment days before Newcastle United visit

Newcastle United great Alan Shearer reckons Pep Guardiola will be ‘raging’ after Manchester City threw away yet another lead in an important game. City were beaten 3-2 by Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League play-off fixture, having held a 2-1 lead going into the 86th minute.

Erling Haaland had given Guardiola’s men the lead with a first-half strike, before Kylian Mbappe equalised on the hour-mark. Phil Foden then won City a late penalty – which the Norwegian dispatched with a plomb.

However, as has been the case many times this season, Guardiola’s men capitulated. Brahim Diaz equalised again on the 86th minute, before a Jude Bellingham strike on the 92nd minute ensured Carlo Ancelotti’s side of the win.

Despite turning in a good defensive display, a mistake from Ederson gifted Real a way back into the clash The Brazilian’s sloppy clearance landed at the feet of Bellingham, allowing Madrid to counter and Diaz to score.

Speaking on Amazon Prime as part of their coverage for City vs Real Madrid, Shearer said: “He’s made some really good saves this evening Ederson, but he’s cost his team there. It’s a really poor kick giving possession back to Real Madrid.

“He just gets it all wrong and all of a sudden he puts his defenders under pressure. He stands up there gets a save, but the rebound falls to Brahim Diaz and he’s not making a mistake from that.

“Goodness me, Pep must be raging. They work so hard to get into a really promising position and then give it away with a basic error.”

City host Newcastle at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon (3pm) with the Magpies looking to jump back into the Premier League top-four with a win. The Magpies will be buoyed knowing that Guardiola’s men have the second leg of their Champions League tie away at Real next Wednesday night, also with very little time to prepare after last night’s defeat.

Eddie Howe‘s squad, on the other hand, will have had a full week to prepare for the trip to the Etihad Stadium and will be well rested and full of confidence on the back of their FA Cup win at Birmingham and securing their place in the Carabao Cup Final with a two-legged win over Arsenal.
