Alan Shearer subjected to naughty dig from Gary Lineker over Newcastle manager’s stint

Gary Lineker aimed a playful dig at Alan Shearer over the Newcastle legend’s unfortunate managerial stint.

Shearer’s time in the hot seat lasted just eight games at the end of the 2008/09 season. The iconic Magpies No 9, who spent a decade scoring goals at St James’ Park, was tasked with saving the club from its first relegation from the Premier League.

His tenure began with a 2-0 loss to Chelsea on April 4, 2009, and the situation barely improved thereafter. Shearer managed to scrape one victory and two draws, culminating in a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa on the final day that sent Newcastle to the Championship, having fallen one point short of safety in 18th place.

Now Lineker has reopened old wounds with a cheeky comment about Shearer’s managerial record. The banter unfolded on The Rest Is Football podcast, where ex-Manchester City defender Micah Richards was venting to the pair about his Fantasy Football frustrations.

Richards explained his hesitation over selecting Josko Gvardiol for his fantasy team. He ultimately chose not to, which backfired when the Croatian defender netted twice against Fulham on Saturday.

The pundit said via the Mirror: “It’s the fact I put him in, took him out, put him in, took him out at least 15 times and then I decided not to go with him.”

Lineker responded: “Micah can I suggest that’s probably a good reason for you never going into management. Can you imagine picking your team, ‘I’ll put him in, no I’ll take him out’. I wonder if managers do that, you know. Have you ever thought about that? “.

The former England striker added: “I mean, Alan, the way your team went it looked like you were doing something like that,” resulting in laughter from Shearer and Richards.

Gvardiol has enjoyed standout performances in an advanced left-back position for Pep Guardiola’s side this season. He has netted four goals in his last five Premier League outings during a crucial period as City chase their fourth consecutive title.
