Eddie Howe says that he needs to sit down and review Anthony Gordon’s red card before Newcastle United decide on whether they will appeal to get his Carabao Cup final ban overturned.
The Scouser was sent off for a two-handed shove on a Brighton player when raising his hands to Jan Paul Van Hecke. Howe did not want to condemn the winger’s absence until he’d taken a thorough look at the incident.
The manager also confirmed a lay off for left-back Lewis Hall while Alexander Isak’s status was also updated. Howe, speaking in his press conference after going out of the FA Cup, said: “I have not seen it (Gordon red card) – I only saw it live. It is very difficult to form an opinion from what I saw on the pitch.
“I don’t know what his intention was. I am sure it was not to harm or get the red card, in that moment I don’t know quite what has happened.
“But I need to review it properly before forming my opinion. If that (a ban) is the case I am so disappointed for him and the team. Knowing the player I know there is no malice intended there.
“But I think at the moment I can only concentrate on today’s game and pick the players up after that. They gave everything physically in the main, there were some players that couldn’t carry on. It was a tough afternoon.”
There was a surprise omission from the squad when England left-back Hall was left out due to an ankle injury. When asked how long Hall would be missing, Howe said: “Lewis has a foot problem, ankle problem after the Liverpool game. He did not really recover well after the game so he has been to see a specialist after a scan. We are awaiting further news.”
Isak also went off during the intense FA Cup encounter but Howe does not believe it is a serious issue, adding: “It was just general tiredness, I don’t think there is a problem there. But as I said before the game if he was fit he would play. Fingers crossed he is OK.”
When asked about Tino Livarmento’s condition Howe said: “He was suffering with cramp”, while also stating that Kieran Trippier went off with a back problem.
