Alexander Isak learns injury fate after Newcastle United star suffers hamstring scare

Newcastle United have been assured that Alexander Isak’s hamstring injury is a minor one – but he will miss Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Bromley on third round day.

Isak was taken off with 25 minutes to go during the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Arsenal, sparking an injury scare for backroom staff. But he has since been assessed and after being handed a couple of days rest, it has been decided he will miss Newcastle’s tie against the League Two outfit.

Howe, speaking at his Press conference, said today: “We think he’s pretty good. He’s seeing his physio at the moment, having a couple of days rest.

“We think he’s in a good place and he’ll report back tomorrow. Initial assessments, fingers crossed he’ll be OK. We would probably have involved him in some way but I think he’ll be given this game to rest.”

Howe is now expected to make a host of changes against Bromley at St James’ Park after an intense run of games for the Magpies. A seven-game winning streak in all competitions has transformed the season for Howe and his staff.

When asked about potential selection, Howe said: “We knew going into the Arsenal game the lads that had played the majority of the minutes were in a good place mentally but physically they were a little bit tired.

“We knew we would have to rotate our squad but we’ve got very good players that are desperate to play and desperate to show their qualities. It’s a good game for them to showcase those qualities but also we have to get through so we have to pick a strong enough squad.”

Howe feels that playing in front of a full house at St James’ Park will be a massive lift for the players after crunch trips to Man United, Spurs and Arsenal. He said: “The three games we had away were brilliant days for us but they were tiring. It’s good to be back at home and now we have a little run there. In these games, they’re never easy home or away but I think it’s nice not to be travelling again from our perspective.”
