Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has revealed that winning the Carabao Cup is more important to him than winning this season’s golden boot or winning PFA player of the year.
Isak insisted that personal accolades are way down the pecking order compared to Newcastle ending their trophy drought after decades of hurt on Tyneside. Isak was a losing finalist the last time Newcastle made it to the Wembley showpiece and lost 2-0 to Manchester United in the capital but is desperate to put things right this time around.
Isak told Sky Sports: “It would be so special. I think winning the League Cup would not just be a win for yourself, it’s a win for the club and a win for the fans. Individual awards mean only you win something. But I would say that winning the League Cup is an individual win as well because every player wants to win trophies.
“It is a big thing to define your career. On top of that, it is so massive for the club. You don’t want to go to a final and lose.”
With Newcastle fighting on three fronts and a Champions League spot, the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup up for grabs, Isak feels that the club can do something special this season.
Isak said: “We need to keep being ourselves but at the same time keep being smart. These are the big games that you want to play in. Obviously we have a massive opportunity to achieve something.”
