With Storm Darragh causing disruption across the region, one visitor attraction forced to close on Saturday has now said it plans to reopen on Sunday, although it warns of possible delays if much weather damage is found in its grounds.
The Alnwick Garden was one of several venues to shut on Saturday due to concerns about high winds which, with driving rain, also put paid to events such as local markets and Christmas experiences. The closure of the garden in Northumberland meant disappointment too for anyone with plans to visit The Treehouse there or its Lilidorei children’s attraction which, as previously reported, was named by National Geographic as one of the best UK venues for family adventures.
Those with pre-booked tickets to missed events, such as Father Christmas and Winter Lights experiences, are to be contacted direct and given an option to rearrange their visit or choose another alternative such as a gift card. On Saturday, The Alnwick Garden shared its plans to reopen on Sunday although it intends to confirm this before the day.
In a post it said: “Currently, after assessing the forecast, we aim to be open across site tomorrow, although there may be a delay in opening due to any clean up caused by the storm.” It added that it plans to give a further Facebook update ahead of Sunday.
Other venues affected this Saturday included Beamish Museum in Country Durham which so far has said: “If you’re planning to visit us on Sunday, based on the forecast we plan to open as usual but please check our social media and website and we’ll keep everyone updated.” National Trust property Gibside, in Rowlands Gill, has also said it will be “going ahead as planned on Sunday” but adds that the weather forecast could change so “if in doubt check the Gibside website on Sunday morning”.
Kielder Winter Wonderland was also among the venues updating its social media on Saturday afternoon with better news following Saturday’s closure. A Facebook post said of Sunday: “Our current plan is that the event will go ahead.
“We’re constantly assessing the situation and if anything changes we’ll update all scheduled visitors.” It added that it will issue a further update at 6pm but in the meantime reminds Sunday’s visitors to wrap up warm.
The weekend’s Tynemouth Market, which was called off on Saturday, has said it will decide on Sunday morning if that day’s event can go ahead.
