A huge medical emergency response was triggered at HMP Frankland today after prison officers sustained ‘life threatening’ injuries in an attack.
Three prison officers required hospital treatment after the incident which is reported to involve Hashem Abedi, the brother of Manchester Arena bomber Salman Abedi.
Emergency services were called to the prison at 10.50am today, where officers sustained injuries including “burns, scalds and stab wounds”, according to the Prison Officers’ Association (POA) said.
The POA added that the “life threatening” injuries occured when Abedi threw hot cooking oil over the officers then produced “home made weapons” and proceeded to stab the officers.
The terrorist prisoner was convicted of assisting with the Manchester terror plot, in which his brother killed 22 people by detonating a home-made rucksack-bomb in a crowd of concert-goers.
Paramedics, doctors, the Great North Air Ambulance Service and a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) were despatched to HMP Frankland, where all three officers were treated before being transported to hospital.
A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 10.50am today (12 April) to attend an incident at HM Prison Frankland in County Durham.
“We dispatched two paramedic ambulance crews, a doctor in a rapid response vehicle, the air ambulance with a second doctor, a specialist paramedic, a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) crew and a duty officer.
“We treated three patients before conveying all to hospital by road. Two of the patients were accompanied by a doctor.”
A Prison Service spokesperson said: “Three prison officers have been treated in hospital after an attack by a prisoner at HMP Frankland. Police are now investigating so it would be inappropriate to comment further.
“Violence in prison will not be tolerated, and we will always push for the strongest punishment for attacks on our hard-working staff.”
