The sudden death of American Idol star Mandisa Lynn at the young age of 47 has led to a police investigation. The Grammy award-winning singer was found dead in her home on April 18, leaving everyone questioning the cause of her premature death.
A source told People: “We can confirm that yesterday Mandisa was found in her home deceased. At this time, we do not know the cause of death or any further details. We ask for your prayers for her family and close knit circle of friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
Mandisa, who captured the hearts of millions on season five of American Idol in 2006, built a successful career as a gospel and contemporary Christian recording artist. After her impressive ninth-place finish on the show, she went on to release albums, four of which – True Beauty, Freedom, What If We Were Real and Overcomer- earned Grammy nominations.
Before getting her big break, Mandisa – whose full name was Mandisa Lynn Hundley – studied vocal jazz at American River College in Sacramento. She then auditioned for American Idol in 2005, stating that her musical influences ranged from Whitney Houston to Def Leppard. She made it to the top nine on the show, as reported by the Mirror.
Following this, Mandisa then released her debut album, True Beauty, in 2007. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Top Christian Albums charts. She went on to release five more albums; It’s Christmas, Freedom, What If We Were Real, Overcomer and Out of the Dark. A compiliation of her best songs, Overcomer: Greatest Hits, was then released in February 2020.
Mandisa won the Best Contemporary Christian Music Album for Overcomer at the 56th Grammy Awards. The title song from the album also won Best Contemporary Christian Music Song for songwriters David Garcia, Ben Glover and Christopher Stevens.
