Newcastle United’s players let down their hair on Sunday after the gruelling, bruising FA Cup clash with Birmingham City on Saturday night. The Magpies came through a real battle to win 3-2 and progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup.
It was a game that saw tackles flying in, and yellow cards brandished like confetti. A throwback to cup clashes of days gone by, Eddie Howe must have been looking through his fingers at some stages as his battered squad risked picking up more injuries.
As it was, Dan Burn limped off in the second half with a groin issue. With Sven Botman already missing through a knee problem, and Lloyd Kelly having departed for Juventus, it leaves Newcastle’s defensive resources looking a bit light. That wasn’t the only blow at the weekend, however, as Howe revealed that Anthony Gordon had missed the game due to an injury he picked up in the Carabao Cup win over Arsenal in midweek.
Howe’s side at least have no midweek game and can try and recuperate from the fatigue that has set in. They return to action on Saturday with a trip to Manchester City on Saturday (3pm).
The Newcastle boss will have to do a roll call of his walking wounded at training today. Here’s a look at the current United injury situation ahead of the game.
Anthony Gordon
Injury: Quad
What we know: The Newcastle winger has been in outstanding form over the last few months, with his goal threat, assists and general intensity. His absence against City would be a big blow. Howe, however, is hopeful he can return at the Etihad. “We hope Anthony will be back in contention next weekend. We treat the cups the same (as the Premier League), everyone who is fit we will take. Anthony was not fit today so he was not here today because he had a problem.”
Potential return date: This weekend
Sven Botman
Injury: Knee injury
What we know: The Dutch defender is being managed carefully after reporting some discomfort in his right knee after the Arsenal game, which saw him replaced late in the second half. Botman subsequently sat out at the weekend and it is hoped he could return to face Erling Haaland & Co. The bonus is that his injury is to the opposite knee which he had his anterior cruciate ligament surgery. Howe said: “We don’t believe it is serious but enough to keep him out of the Birmingham game.”
Potential return date: This weekend
Dan Burn
Injury: Groin
What we know: The big defender signalled to the bench in the second half at Birmingham that he could no longer continue. A virtual ever-present this season, the Geordie has cemented his place in the starting XI. “We were forced to take Dan Burn off,” said Howe after the cup tie. “It was something with his groin. Fingers crossed it’s not too bad.”
Potential return date: Unknown
Harvey Barnes
Injury: Thigh
What we know: The winger suffered a thigh strain in the first half of the FA Cup game against Bromley. Eddie Howe said: “Harvey will be missing for a period of time. We don’t think it’s a serious injury but it’s enough to keep him out for a few weeks, we’re probably looking at around a month. That’s the early assessment. It’s an injury to the muscle in his thigh.’
Potential return date: Late February 2025
Jamaal Lascelles
Injury: Anterior cruciate ligament
What we know: The club captain is nearing a return after his ACL injury in March last year. His rehab has been longer than Sven Botman’s given the severity of the injury, but he is back in training as he looks to build up his workload.
Potential return date: March 2025
Joelinton
Injury: Knee ligament
What we know: The midfielder will be sidelined for ‘weeks’ rather than months after injuring his knee against Fulham. Faces a race to be fit for the cup final on March 16.
Potential return date: March 2025
Callum Wilson
Injury: Thigh injury
What we know: Wilson started his first game of the season on Saturday and lasted just under an hour. It was a welcome sight after the striker had picked up a thigh injury in December, which had followed on from hamstring issues at the start of the campaign. Speaking after after the cup win he said: “I’ve worked hard to get into the position now to be able to start games again. I didn’t want to come back too soon so that I was coming off the bench trying to get my fitness up.” Should hopefully be fine for Saturday again.
Jamal Lewis
Injury: Ankle
What we know: The forgotten man at Newcastle, Lewis had secured a sensational loan move to Brazilian giants Sao Paolo at the start of the season. However, his spell was cut short after he suffered an ankle injury, with the Brazil club sending him back to Newcastle amid fears it could need surgery that would rule him out for the rest of the season. Remarkably, Lewis then appeared on Newcastle’s 24-man list of players submitted to the Premier League at the weekend for the second half of the 2024-25 campaign.
Potential return date: Unknown
