Anthony Gordon red card verdict and Liverpool final fears in FA Cup loss – ‘let the team down’

Newcastle United are out of the FA Cup, losing the game 2-1 against Brighton in extra time as the prospect of another cup looms over them – but fans in the Chronicle Live comments section say that the task to bring home the Carabao Cup looks more distant now than it did last week.

An Alexander Isak penalty was all that the home side could muster. Yankuba Minteh returned to haunt Newcastle and scored before half time, and a penalty shootout was on the cards until Danny Welbeck gave Brighton the game deep into extra time.

Anthony Gordon was sent off late in the game for a shove against the back of Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke, and looks set for a three-game automatic ban for his loss of composure – which will include the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool if the club cannot make a successful appeal in time. Tariq Lamptey would also receive his marching orders a little later to remove Brighton’s brief advantage, but it was not enough to help Newcastle United over the line.

Few are feeling optimistic about Wembley on the 16th March, considering what they’ve just seen. Gordon’s red card is a particular worry, with reader N Shields Lad saying: “Gordon lost his composure, and if he appeals he will lose that also unfortunately.”

Commenter Bluesee agrees: “He can have no complaints he lost his composure and has let the team down.”

Dudley53 writes: “Brighton were the better team sadly. Gordon going out of his mind has weakened us further for the cup final. We are just nowhere near good enough at moment. That said, the changes Eddie made in game were woeful. Too many so-called stars not playing to their best, or even near it.”

There are some who thought that a straight red card for Gordon was harsh, considering incidents elsewhere at the weekend. RIW says: “When you consider what Gordon did to that of Roberts, the Millwall keeper, and Cunha, Wolves midfielder, it’s nothing. But they will all get the same punishment, a three match ban.”

Not that the rest of the display convinced many. Jetx writes: “We were disappointing today – again. Where has our fearless, high press team gone? Same players, just about. They must find their mojo again if we are to get anywhere this season.”

Oldcoop says: “Newcastle’s passing is terrible – I wonder what percentage of their passes end up as intended? Also they can’t hold onto the ball – it’s pinched off their toes far too easily. And why can’t they do throw-ins?”

Daftlad writes: “If we give the ball away like we have been doing this season, we will be destroyed by Liverpool. Keeping Isak free of injury will be paramount to get anything out of the cup match.”

1snowbear says: “Lacklustre performance, play like today against Liverpool at Wembley and it will be a walkover for the Reds, abysmal performance today!”
