Pundit Troy Deeney has labelled Alexander Isak the “best striker in the Premier League” and called on Arsenal to sign the Newcastle United star to boost their title hopes.
Isak is in a rich vein of form, having found the back of the net seven times in his past six matches to help lift the Magpies up to fifth in the table. His close range finish in their Boxing Day victory over Aston Villa took the Swedish international’s goal tally to 11 in the top flight this season. Isak has been repeatedly linked with a move to Arsenal.
Deeney named Isak in his Premier League team of the week. In his BBC column, Deeney wrote: “Back again, the man, the myth, Mr Isak. He’s the best striker in the Premier League currently. Arsenal, just sign him and you’ll win the league, it’s really not that difficult.”
The former Watford striker also selected Isak’s United teammate Anthony Gordon and Liverpool man Cody Gakpo on the flanks in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Gordon and Gakpo registered against Villa and Leicester City respectively.
“Both these players were excellent and dynamic,” said Deeney. “They drove their teams forward and both scored. They were both thorns in the opposition’s side and looking like the players we know they can be.”
Magpies star Joelinton also made the cut in central midfield alongside Liverpool’s Curtis Jones. Deeney said: “He is a beast of a man. If you remember he was actually bought as a number nine. How silly were they? He is a centre-midfielder and has been excellent in Newcastle’s rise for the past four weeks. He’s in the team for the first time this season.”
Deeney picked Eddie Howe as his manager of the week. Four wins on the bounce has transformed the Magpies’ season.
“He lost out on the England job and he’s the only English manager that realistically had a chance of getting it,” said Deeney. “So it’s good to see him doing well. We just need to see some more consistency.”
