The thrilling reality gameshow The Traitors is making a comeback, but some viewers might need a refresher on the rules and how contestants can bag the cash prize.
First-time watchers may be left scratching their heads as intense terms like ‘Traitor’ and ‘murder’ are thrown around by participants and returning host Claudia Winkleman. But rest assured, it’s all part of the game – a game that could see someone pocketing more than £100,000, reports the Mirror.
So what are the rules exactly? What do the Faithful and other contestants have to do to win the jackpot? And are there any special tools they can use to give them an edge in the game?
All contestants start off as Faithfuls when they enter the castle, where most of the action unfolds. They soon discover if they’ll stay in that role for the duration of the series or if they’ll become a Traitor.
The main task of each Faithful is to sniff out the Traitors in the group and banish them from the competition. Meanwhile, Traitors must strive to remain under the radar while eliminating as many Faithfuls as possible.
If the Faithfuls manage to oust all the Traitors before the game ends, the remaining players are declared winners and split the prize money between them. However, if any Traitors are still lurking undetected, they walk away with all of the cash.
The Faithfuls will remain in the dark about the presence of any Traitors among them until the grand finale. The identity of the Traitors is determined at the contestants’ inaugural Round Table meeting, with host Claudia Winkleman designating the Traitors by a tap on the shoulder.
The Round Table also serves as a forum for contestants to voice their suspicions about potential Traitors amongst them throughout the show. Following these discussions, they cast votes to expel a contestant. The unfortunate individual who garners the most votes is promptly ousted from the show, but not before disclosing their true allegiance – Faithful or Traitor – to the rest of the group.
In addition to this, the Traitors conduct covert meetings and even have the power to ‘murder’ a Faithful. Despite its ominous connotation, ‘murder’ essentially equates to banishment. However, the chosen victim receives a ‘death warrant’, signalling their elimination from the game. The identities of those ‘murdered’ are only revealed to the remaining contestants at breakfast the following day.
Faithful contestants are kept in the dark about the exact number of Traitors active at any given time during the game. This information is exclusive to the Traitors, who are also privy to the identities of their comrades.
They also have the option to convert Faithfuls into Traitors. If a Traitor is successfully expelled by the Faithfuls, the remaining Traitors may opt to recruit more members to tip the scales in their favour.
Aside from the dramatic banishments and murders, all contestants are required to participate in regular missions. These consist of a variety of challenges and tasks that offer the opportunity to add money to the prize fund, which could total up to a whopping £120,000. Gold coins symbolise the prize fund, although they don’t carry a specific monetary value.
Contestants have the chance to acquire special items during missions. In the last series, the Shield was a coveted item won as a side quest during these tasks. Once in possession, it shields its holder from the next murder, but if not used, it expires. Daggers are another special item, allowing the holder to double their vote at the next Round Table.
Like shields, daggers also expire if not used, so contestants are motivated to use them. It’s common for contestants to keep quiet about possessing a shield or dagger, fearing it may make them a target for the Traitors.
Series three might introduce more unexpected twists or alterations to the rules. This follows previous series where Traitors had the power to put contestants on trial or send them to the dungeon.
In series two, the Traitors were forced to select four members of the group, including at least one of their own, to sit out the day’s activities. The victorious team from that day’s challenge had the option to grant immunity to one of those put on trial. Whether this rule will be reinstated for series three remains to be seen.
The Traitors begins tomorrow night at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
