Newcastle United have had a whole week to stew on last weekend’s defeat to Manchester City – and know they have two huge opportunities to put things right in the coming days. Eddie Howe’s side face high-flying Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park on Sunday before heading to Anfield to take on league leaders Liverpool on Wednesday.
After such a good run of form in the Premier League, the Magpies have one won just one of their last four in the league – at lowly Southampton – and require a response to that 4-0 setback at the Etihad. Howe has several options open to him if he wants to make changes, but much depends on the fitness of key players.
The United head coach will speak to the media this morning and we’ll have updates on Sven Botman’s fitness, with the Dutch defender a candidate to return. There’ll also be questions over if and when Nick Pope returns to the side, with the goalkeeper now fit and impressing against Birmingham City in the FA Cup.
