Boxing Day sales in Newcastle as shoppers flock to bag a bargain

After the festive shopping frenzy in the run-up to Christmas, lots of Newcastle stores were flat-out busy again on Thursday as customers turned out for the traditional Boxing Day sales.

There were crowds in the city centre out to pick up a bargain, Northumberland Street and Eldon Square enjoying some of the busiest trade with shoppers seen laden with carrier bags. And there were giant sale notices everywhere, filling shop windows which just a couple of days ago had been dressed for Christmas.

But not all shops opened their doors, with M&S a notable exception. As previously reported, the store had earlier announced it would be closed on Boxing Day to allow staff more family time. Its own seasonal sale is set to start in most branches on Friday, December 27 instead. The White Company and WHSmith were also amongst those closed.

Despite the popularity of online shopping, the lure of a Boxing Day trip to town clearly still appeals to many and the majority of the high street is just as keen to make the most of a prime sales opportunity, tempting customers with huge discounts – many advertising 50% off – on a wide range of items. The day typically marks the first chance for people to return or exchange any unwanted Christmas gifts too.

The Metrocentre in Gateshead saw similar busy scenes on Boxing Day morning, with queues building outside favourite stores advertising half-price stock. And with big savings set to continue in coming days, shoppers no doubt will continue to be out in force across the region to take advantage of them.
