Newcastle United skipper Bruno Guimaraes has insisted that the bitter 2023 affair against Manchester United at Wembley has taught him valuable lessons.
The Brazil international even opted against bleaching his hair for the big day as he tried to keep things normal in the build-up to the Carabao Cup final. Bruno was in tears after the 2-0 loss to the Red Devils two years ago, knowing that both he and his team-mates had not stepped up to the plate for the final showpiece.
Speaking at the Press conference ahead of the Carabao Cup final, Guimaraes said: “We are more relaxed, but we know if we win, what it will mean to the fans. We want to make everyone in this city happy.
“We have to play our game, nothing different, and hopefully everything would be good for us. Our confidence is very high at the moment.”
Newcastle go into the clash knowing they held Liverpool to a 3-3 draw at St James’ Park earlier in the season. They were second best at Anfield last month in a 2-0 defeat on Merseyside though.
However, this clash offers the chance to take the Reds on at a neutral venue with Bruno confident of success. The former Lyon star added: “We’re feeling good, a good opportunity for ourselves, everyone is very excited, as a team and a city we have worked very hard to get here, and hopefully we can finally get this trophy back to Newcastle.
“We just want to make thousands and thousands of Geordies happy. My message is to stay positive; we will do our best to bring this trophy back to Newcastle.”
Liverpool go into the game as the overwhelming favourites with most bookies but also have fresh memories of losing on penalties to Paris St-Germain in their minds after a Champions League exit in midweek.
Guimaraes said: “We are seeing this as a big opportunity to make history for this football club.”
