Callan Rydz has warmly embraced the playful chants about his hairstyle at the World Darts Championship, thanking the Alexandra Palace crowd for their support.
Rydz advanced to the quarter-finals after a nail-biting 4-3 victory over Welshman Rob Owen on Monday (December 30), with his hair becoming a talking point during the match.
Not only did it attract the attention of the notorious Ally Pally wasp, but also sparked chants from the audience about his “s*** hair”. Displaying a great sense of humour in his post-match press conference, he remarked: “They can say what they say, I’ll not cry about it.

“I’ve had worse off loads of people back home. My best friends, they rip the mick out of us all the time. The crowd won me that game, I didn’t win it.
“I’m all for the banter – I can give it them just as much as they can give it me, if I meet them individually. I love the banter with them and I think they won me this game, I didn’t win it through darts, so I’ve got to thank them.”
Correcting a misunderstanding, he clarified (via the Express): “They were saying Man United, but I’m a Newcastle fan! No, thank you very much to everyone”, reports the Mirror.
In a touching moment, Rydz paid homage to his late grandmother, sharing: “I saw a photo this week of me celebrating Christmas with my grandma who I lost and it really hurt, so this is for her.”
Despite a patchy display, Rydz secured a 4-3 win over Owen with a double 10, but was left feeling underwhelmed by his performance, which still yielded a respectable 97 average. “I didn’t feel like I played good there but I have seen the average and I was decent,” he said.
“I have a day off tomorrow to recharge the batteries. I think Rob is a great lad and just the crowd got me through this game, so thank you very much everyone.”
This quarter-final berth marks Rydz’s third at the Ally Pally, coming after his impressive victory over Dimitri van den Bergh, who had previously labelled him “unstable”. Rydz had responded to the jibe with determination, saying: “I went, ‘He’s not wrong,’ but I think that was the fire in the belly that I needed.”
