Carabao Cup prize money in full as Newcastle United target history – and Liverpool downfall

Newcastle United will be hoping it’s their name on the Carabao Cup when they wake up on Monday morning.

The Magpies are gearing up to meet Liverpool at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, March 16 with kick-off coming at 4.30pm. Thousands of supporters are making the journey to London this weekend, all daring to dream.

Eddie Howe’s men know that they’d be writing their name into Tyneside folklore with a win against the Reds this weekend, bringing an end to a 70-year trophy drought as a result.

The FA Cup Final win back in 1955 was the last domestic trophy won by the Toon with generations of supporters still waiting to see that first piece of silverware make its way back to Newcastle.

If they were to win the Carabao Cup this weekend, the Magpies would also secure a return to European football, with a place in the UEFA Conference League qualifying stages guaranteed for the winner.

They might eventually go on to better that with their final Premier League position.

But what would the two teams win in terms of prize money? Unfortunately for Newcastle, it wouldn’t be all that much of a financial boost as top-flight clubs continue to comply with PSR.

In fact, the winners of this year’s competition will only pick up £100,000 in prize money, while the runners-up take home just £50,000. The prize money is dwarfed by other competitions and that, perhaps, offers up an insight as to why clubs prioritise other avenues.

In the Premier League last season, all 20 clubs were awarded more than £100million for their final positions in the top-flight. The FA Cup, meanwhile, pays out £2million to the winners – as well as prize money along the way.
