Carol Vorderman has candidly spoken about a cancer scare after “many merry years” of excessive sunbathing. The 63 year old admitted it was a regular habit during her youth. She previously confessed: “Oh God, yes. I was burning away merrily for many, many years. I’m of the generation where we started to sunbathe – my mother’s generation didn’t. We were also caught in the formative years, the 60s, 70s, 80s, where we had absolutely no idea of what sun protection was – you just couldn’t buy it.”
“I think it was the 90s that began. So in all of our youth we were encouraging each other to sunbathe doused in cooking oil,” she revealed. Carol experienced a skin cancer scare around the age of 50. After noticing changes in her skin, she sought advice from a dermatologist who sent off a biopsy for testing. The results showed precancerous cells.

Carol stated: “I had no symptoms, nothing like that” but emphasised that she doesn’t want people feeling sorry for her – but would rather they heed her advice on sun protection. Following the removal of the cells, Carol now has an annual check-up and is diligent about using SPF.
She opened up about her sun habits, sharing: “In many ways, the damage is already done, but I don’t sunbathe now, I cover myself up”. Tragically, Carol revealed that she lost her mum to cancer in 2017, who fought against three types of cancer, with melanoma being the last one, reports the Mirror.
Reflecting on her mum’s condition and their differences, Carol said: “Not a single time in her life did she sunbathe – my mum had a different skin to me, she had moles, I don’t. I know that makes you much more prone to melanomas.”

Carol has recently been in the news when it was revealed that I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! contestant, DJ Melvin Odoom, had a crush on her. The truth came out when Melvin’s luxury item in the jungle turned out to be a pillow, that featured a photo of Carol on it, alongside snaps of his family.
“I have been a fan of Carol Vorderman for a very long time, in fact I have a little rap,” he revealed on the show. “‘I know a woman so fine, she’s mature like a fine wine. The mandem can’t comprehend my 10 out of 10 Carol Vorderman, woo. I wanna work her out, check your DMs girl and I’ll be waiting.’”
Carol later recorded a voice note for Melvin, saying: “Melvin, I’m blushing redder than that leather red dress I’m wearing on your pillowcase. But I’ll be rooting for you all the way through, and see you on the other side,” she said. She also sent him a message after he left the jungle, sent to his account handler, that read: “Please give him my best. He’s done so well.”
