Chinese New Year celebrations in Sunderland as crowds gather for food and dances

Take a look at pictures of the Chinese New Year celebrations in Sunderland as crowds gathered for food and dances. Several events took place at Sunniside Gardens on Sunday to see in the year of the snake.

From 11am-3pm, visitors were able to enjoy the culture of multiple different countries, including China, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia, Vietnam and Singapore.

Asian food, traditional and contemporary entertainment, and dances by people dressed as a lion, a dragon and even a unicorn were all part of the festivities in the city.

The musical performances included classical and modern dance, as well as musicians playing Chinese classical instruments and a fashion show. As well as watching these authentic dances, those more inclined towards arts and crafts were taking part in workshops.

From wood snake themed paper cutting, to Chinese figures and snake bookmarks, as well as opportunities to try origami and calligraphy, there was something for every member of the family.

Visitors were also able to buy Asian-inspired products such as dragon puppets, masks and Chinese snacks, while the food traders in attendance included Japanese street food experts Arigato and XL Sushi, who served people hot sushi and Katsu curry dishes.
