Chris Rigg outlines Sunderland ambitions after ‘best feeling ever’

Youngster Chris Rigg has described scoring goals for Sunderland as “the best feeling ever” while his aim next season is to become “a regular starter.”

The teenager, who reaches the ripe old age of 17 on the 18th of next month, burst on to the scene in January 2023 against Shrewsbury Town and surprised many with his assured performances in midfield for one so young.

Rigg went on to play for the club 21 times in last season’s league campaign but with the uncertainty around the fact there is no head coach in place, there is still a doubt over his future at the Stadium of light.

But, reassuringly for Sunderland fans, Rigg only has sights on next season in familiar surroundings and it’s clear he loves the club.

Interviewed on the Sunderland YouTube channel he said: “Personally it was a good season for me. Making my Championship debut, scoring Championship goals. Mainly just getting opportunities and just being around it.

His first league goal for Sunderland came in September last season in a 5-0 rout of Southampton. It came five minutes into stoppage time.

“Before the game I was nervous, but just trying to calm myself down and then after, when you score that goal, you are just on a high and you don’t know what to do, especially in the moment as well, that’s probably the best feeling.

“It’s something you can’t really put into words to be fair. It is like the best feeling ever, scoring a goal.”

He added: “I’ve got nothing but love for the fans. Next season I’m trying to cement my place and be a regular starter. I’ll be trying to hit my targets, with goals and assists, and trying to get the club back in the Premier League.”
