Coronation Street enthusiasts have just realised why David Platt famously refers to his mother by her first name Gail. It’s well-known that the relationship between Gail (played by Helen Worth) and David (portrayed by Jack P. Shepherd) has been tumultuous, including a well-remembered scene where David sent Gail tumbling down the stairs.
However, this week was particularly poignant as we witnessed an emotional farewell to Gail, who was leaving the soap after an astounding 50-year stint. Earlier in June, Helen announced her departure, expressing it was “the perfect time” to exit the show. On Christmas Day, Coronation Street lovers got teary-eyed as Gail married Jesse Chadwick (John Thompson), marking her seventh walk down the aisle.
The newlyweds Gail and Jesse then bid farewell to Weatherfield for a fresh start in France. In the build-up to her grand exit, sentimental scenes unfolded with Gail spending precious moments with her children Nick (Ben Price), Sarah (Tina O’Brien), David, and her mum Audrey (Sue Nicholls).
Gail’s departure certainly caused a splash amongst the Platts, with David himself seen shedding a tear or two. And, in a moving turn during her final episode, David called her ‘mum’ for the very first time, reports the Daily Star.
Corrie enthusiasts who’ve been scratching their heads over why David calls his mum Gail by her first name might have finally pieced the puzzle together, all thanks to a bit of detective work on social media. The consensus is that it’s linked to Gail’s past consideration of an abortion during her pregnancy with David—a revelation he discovered much later in life.
One fan theorised: “I think it goes back to when he found out that Gail considered aborting him.” Another added: “He has called her Gail for years and years – ever since he discovered that she tried to abort him. Now THAT’S disrespectful.”
Someone else weighed in: “They fell out badly when he found out that Gail had considered aborting him. I think that was the first time he sneered and called her Gail.” In a candid chat about being part of the iconic Platt clan on the ITV show, Jack, who portrays David, told to Plymouth Live: “There’s a lot of us. And you can look at the kids now, and there’s three.”
He continued, “So, we’ve got my kid, Nick’s and Sarah’s lookalikes for the next gen I’ve got Lily for Sarah, Nick sees himself in Sam and Harry is me all over. We’ve got top banter, a bit of work only a smidge really. Once that’s sorted, its back to the house! ” adding a touch of humour to the conversation.
