With Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) still missing from the cobbles and presumed dead, lots of Weatherfield locals have found themselves in the frame.
However, there’s another twist in the tale as Nathan Curtis (Chris Harper) returns to Coronation Street. Nathan was the man who groomed Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) as part of a sex trafficking scheme in 2017. Bethany managed to escape in heartbreaking scenes and her attackers were later jailed – but he’s since been released.
Bethany is the one who first spots Nathan. As the police conduct a reconstruction of Lauren’s last known movements in the precinct, Bethany’s completely thrown to spot Nathan in the crowd watching on.
As she sees her abuser for the first time in years, Bethany starts to wonder whether Nathan had something to do with Lauren’s disappearance. Could he be returning to the scene of the crime?
Bethan is horrified to see Nathan again because she thought he was still behind bars. However, she discovers he was released from prison some time ago and is working on a building site nearby.
Knowing his history with young girls, Bethany soon hits on the idea that Nathan could be behind Lauren’s suspected murder.
As Bethany throws all her eggs into Nathan’s basket, she’s forced to confront her abuser once more as she determines to bring Lauren’s attacker to justice.
Actor Chris Harper has returned to the show seven years after his exit, and reveals how it feels to be back. Chris said: “I was emotional when I was told about Nathan’s potential return. During the 18 months he was in it before, hundreds of people shared with me how the storyline reflected something they, or someone they loved, had lived through. It remains important to keep them in mind as we continue Bethany’s story.”
He continued: “Once again, I am grateful for the ongoing support of Barnardo’s, NSPCC, S.H.E.UK, and all the people who trusted me last time. We have another chance to raise an issue that affects so many lives, so often shrouded in shame.”
It’s hard reprising a character after so long, but Chris was happy to throw himself back into work. He said: “I do love playing Nathan though. He is funny, deceitful, slippery, manipulative and ruthless. Now he is also under a lot of pressure too. This new storyline is absolutely full of twists.
“It really is good to be back on the hallowed cobbles. So much has happened since we saw Nathan sent to prison, but Coronation Street is a constant. I feel like the cast, crew and the whole team are old friends.”
