The Good Ship Murder is back with a Christmas special episode, and a brand-new series, now, first look images show the two leads like never before. Coronation Street’s Shayne Ward stars as cabaret singer turned detective Jack Grayling and Catherine Tyldesley as ambitious First Officer Kate Woods.
The Christmas special will air in just few days time with the new series kicking off in January, here are the first look images teasing what’s to come in the New Year. This includes Shayne and Catherine looking very dolled up in suits and ballroom gowns. In the glamorous shot, Shayne has his hair slicked back rather than showing off his signature curls, and Catherine stunt in a floor length red gown.
The pictures also tease the arrival of a new character, Mia, who is Jack’s teenage daughter. Played by Millie Kent, Mia arrives on the ship just after Christmas, and throws a spanner in the works for Jack and Kate. In the second series, the boat heads to Rome where there will be more murder mysteries to solve for Jack and Kate.
The new episode spell the return of much loved Cruise Director Beverley Carnell, played by Claire Sweeney. The first look images also tease the arrival of Hollyoaks star Ross Adams, who joins the cast as new character Colin Smallwood, and the series will also see a host of guest stars joining the voyage.
Talking about their very first Christmas episode (Wednesday 18 December), Catherine teased some rising chemistry between the two main characters. She said: “Kate has blown hot and cold with Jack for such a long time, unfairly in a lot of those circumstances. You’ll see some festive romance at Christmas and there are certain scenes where their chemistry really kicks in.”
When faced with a few difficult situations onboard, Jack jumps in to save the day, for more than one reason. Shayne revealed: “He’s trying to impress Kate. He basically says ‘if anyone can make it happen, it’s me’. The pressure is on because he doesn’t want to let all the kids on the ship down either so there’s a big task ahead of him.”
For fans of the show, Shayne performing a song at the end of every episode is a show staple, and one that will be continuing for the Christms episode and beyond. As per the end of show tradition, singer Jack performs at the lounge and picks a festive special.
Shayne, who recently exited Strictly Come Dancing and rose to fame on the X-Factor in 2005 explained: “We picked The Power of Love, and I absolutely love singing that number. A lot of people still believe it’s a Christmas song, and it fitted better than Jingle Bells, I couldn’t have imagined doing that – it wouldn’t have been a good ending.”
