Coronation Street legend Bev Callard has been singing the praises of her husband Jon McEwan for his unwavering support during some of her toughest times. The actress, who’s best known for her iconic role as Liz McDonald on the soap, got candid on Good Morning Britain with hosts Ed Balls and Susanna Reid, with her other half Jon by her side.
Not only is Bev a star on our screens, but she’s also championing mental health as an ambassador for Mind, keen to encourage conversations about mental health struggles. She bravely shared her own battle with clinical depression, revealing that 15 years ago, the pressures of Corrie led to her being “hospitalised” and receiving “electroshock therapy”.

Bev couldn’t help but heap praise on Jon, who made a touching move to understand her plight better by training to become her counsellor. Touched by their bond, Susanna highlighted Jon’s dedication on the show, saying: “Jon is here in the studio,” before turning to him and adding, “You trained to be a counsellor to better understand Bev’s condition, didn’t you?”
Jon opened up about his experience, saying: “Well I did, because it was a few years ago and there wasn’t any help for the partners, so I kind of thought ‘I’ve got to learn about this and the more I learn, the more I can help Beverley’.”
He went on to confirm, “So yeah, I did do that,” reports Lancs Live.

Susanna delved deeper, keen to understand how Bev’s husband not only supported his wife but also took care of himself. She recognised that both Bev and Jon would have been impacted in their own ways.
Bev jumped in with more accolades for her spouse, expressing: “[Jon] He’s great as well because also for the partner they need to retain their own identity and there is no help out there for them and it’s really hard living with someone who is going through that and in that black hole.”
The couple revealed they had actually found support from a Coronation Street colleague and her former partner. Bev shared: “Denise Welch’s husband at the time Tim Healy, he was a great help.”
She continued, “He used to take Jon out on the motorbikes and he said ‘scream at the moon Jon’,” acknowledging the incredible support from their friends.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1, from 6am
