A popular pub in Northumberland loved by Vera star Brenda Blethyn is celebrating after making the cut for the Good Food Guide 2025, having become the actress’ favourite place to go for food between filming.
It was when chatting to ChronicleLive at a Vera press event in London in November that much loved TV detective Brenda revealed just how much she’d enjoyed her visits to The Rat inn in Anwick, near Hexham, whenever she was up in the North East to shoot a new series of the hit ITV dramas, with both her and the show’s producer Will Nicholson full of praise for the pub that boasts amazing views of the stunning Northumberland landscape.
And its not just Brenda and Will who are keen admirers of The Rat Inn, as they have also made it into The Good Food Guide, whose experts have been reviewing Britain’s best restaurants, pubs and cafés since 1951. Sharing a photo of the letter they received to confirm their inclusion, The Rat took to Instagram to write: “Late to the party but very happy to be included in the @goodfoodguideuk 2025. Honoured to be included and thanks to everyone that voted for us!!”
A number of people were quick to react to The Rat’s great news, with one of their followers replying: “Congratulations! Wishing you lots of further success in 2025” as a second wrote: “Well deserved”
Making the new Guide isn’t the only bit of national acclaim to come The Rat’s way in the last few months as, after finding out they’d made a list of the top 50 gastropubs in the UK, the pub ended up at number 20 in the rankings, the highest placed representative from the North East.
Towards the end of last week, as they shared their new Sunday lunch offerings, The Rat confirmed that they were already fully booked for Mother’s Day, which this year falls on Sunday, March 30.
