Two men have appeared in court after an alleged “street altercation” where a pedestrian was struck by a car in County Durham.
Durham Constabulary say a 50-year-old man was struck by a black Renault Megane in Faraday Street, Ferryhill at around 2.45pm on Thursday, December 19. The incident allegedly followed an “altercation in the street” involving a number of people.
A man was given medical attention at the roadside then taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. He remains in hospital in a serious condition.
Hugh Holmes, 35, of Tudhoe Moor, Spennymoor, has since been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, driving with no insurance, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, and failing to provide a specimen for analysis. James Cowie, 27, of Kilburn Street, Shildon, was also charged with affray.
Both have been remanded into custody and appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on Saturday. The men entered no pleas and were remanded in custody until their next appearance at Durham Crown Court on January 20.
Two women aged 30 and 33, and a man aged 35 who were also arrested have been released on bail while enquiries continue.
