Dan Burn gets England call-up as Eddie Howe reacts to Newcastle United star’s ‘great comeback’

Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has been named in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad to face Albania and Latvia. The shock move comes after the star’s great form this season.

The Blyth lad could get his Three Lions debut in the World Cup qualifiers at the age of 32 at Wembley during the international fixtures next week. Burn told reporters that he had almost given up on an international call after being overlooked by Gareth Southgate despite helping Newcastle get to the Champions League in 2023.

Howe said: “It is an incredible moment for Dan and I have to say nobody is more deserving than Dan. It is a great story, it is a great comeback, somebody who has done it the hard way through the leagues. He is the model pro.

“He is so committed to what he does. He has been given great strengths, with his height they are great weapons. And he has improved all the other areas.”

However, Tuchel is impressed with his versatility and his form at centre-back for Newcastle this term. Tuchel was in the stands at West Ham for the 1-0 win on Monday night with Burn again catching the eye.

The 6ft 7in gets a chance due to an injury to his team-mate Lewis Hall but is understood to have received a phonecall from Tuchel out of the blue yesterday. Injuries to defenders such as John Stones, Harry Maguire, and Joe Gomez have also seen him elevate up the national pool, having originally been on a 55-man shortlist.

Burn has previously said about being called up: “I would be surprised but I don’t think there are many defenders like me. I can play two or three different positions, wing-back, full-back or left of the three. I do think I will bring something to the squad.”

With two games at Wembley coming up for Tuchel’s first chapter as boss, Burn looks set to get that opportunity. Newcastle have had a flurry of call-ups for Hall, Tino Livramento, Nick Pope and Anthony Gordon in recent years.

Livramento and Gordon are also named in the squad. Gordon is eligible for international duty despite his domestic ban which seems him suspended for the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley on Sunday.

However, goalkeeper Pope has been left out. The United shot-stopper has only recently returned from injury and needs more games to get up to speed. His place has been taken by Burnley’s James Trafford, who is a transfer target for Newcastle this summer.

Other surprise inclusions are Jordan Henderson and Marcus Rashford, who both come in from the cold. However Adam Wharton, Jack Grealish and Trent Alexander-Arnold aren’t included – the latter picked up an injury in midweek and is set to miss the cup final.
