David Beckham has shown his true colours following Newcastle United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final. The Magpies stormed past Arne Slot’s side at Wembley Stadium on Sunday evening, lifting their first trophy since 1969.
Dan Burn put Newcastle ahead at the end of the first half before Alexander Isak doubled the Magpies’ lead shortly after the break. Federico Chiesa pulled one back in stoppage time – but the Reds couldn’t find an equaliser.
After the game, Beckham congratulated Newcastle on their victory. On his Instagram story, the Manchester United legend penned a brilliant message, describing the fans as ‘some of the best and most loyal’.
Beckham said: “Amazing moment today for a club with some of the best and most loyal supporters in the game… congratulations to all the Geordies [white and black heart emoji] @nufc.”
Speaking to to Classic Football Shirts in November 2023, the former England international revealed he had a soft spot for Newcastle when he was growing up.
Beckham said: “Newcastle always had good shirts, to be honest.
“I’ve always loved Newcastle as a club, I love the fans, I love the way they are. We played up in Newcastle for England and they were amazing. The final (in 1999) was the easiest out of the three games (to win the treble).”
Then, in July 2019, Steve Bruce claimed Beckham urged him to succeed Rafa Benitez at St James’s Park. When asked if he had friends and family who told him to take the Newcastle job, the 64-year-old said: “Yeah, tons of them.
“‘You’ve got to do it’, people said. I don’t want to mention names, but David Beckham was one of them. I’ll have to show my daughter that text message.”
After watching Newcastle bulldoze past Liverpool, Beckham will shift his attention to Inter Miami’s clash against Atlanta United later in the evening. The Englishman will be hoping Javier Mascherano’s side can extend their unbeaten start to the new MLS campaign.
