Newcastle United are gearing up for the biggest game of their season in this weekend’s Carabao Cup Final clash with Liverpool.
The Magpies meet Arne Slot’s high-flying Reds beneath the Wembley arch looking to end their well-documented wait for silverware. You have to go back to 1955 for the last domestic trophy triumph – a 3-1 win over Manchester City in the FA Cup Final.
Eddie Howe’s side would, if they win, bring an end to a 70-year wait for a trophy – and firmly write their names into the Newcastle history books. Aside from the opportunity to become black and white legends, the Magpies’ players know they’re also 90 minutes away from a potential return to European football.
But what competition would Newcastle qualify for if they were to pick up the trophy this weekend? Chronicle Live has the latest below.
Would Newcastle qualify for the Europe with a win?
Unlike previous seasons, the winners of the Carabao Cup will not qualify for the Europa League. They would, however, earn a place in the play-off round of the UEFA Conference League.
Winners of the competition would previously qualified for the Europa League qualifying stages, prior to the introduction of the Conference League back in 2021. Now, since the founding of the Conference League, the winners compete in the third-tier European competition.

Could that change?
However, If Newcastle were to win the competition and finish in the Premier League’s top-four – or top-five as it looks set to be this season due to European coefficients – they would qualify for the Champions League. The Toon would relinquish their place in the competition – qualifying for the superior competition.
What about the runners-up?
If the unthinkable were to happen, and Newcastle were defeated by Liverpool in the final, they would not qualify for any UEFA competitions by virtue of reaching the final.
Even if Liverpool – who are 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League – were to secure Champions League qualification for next season, their Conference League position would be transferred to the next highest Premier League team who has not qualified for European football next season, rather than the Magpies.
Newcastle can still benefit from Liverpool winning the competition if they were to finish in seventh place, though they’ll want to take matters into their own hands.
