A driver left the scene of a crash which closed a County Durham road after a vehicle hit a lamp post.
Emergency services were called to Pelton Lane in Chester-le-Street shortly after noon on Boxing Day. A Peugeot was found to have left the road and crashed into a lamp post, causing extensive damage.
The driver had already left the scene before the arrival of Durham Constabulary. The road remained closed for approximately four-and-a-half hours while it was cleared and engineers carried out precautionary safety checks on the gas supply.
A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: “Shortly after 12.25pm on Boxing Day, emergency services were called to a one-vehicle road traffic collision on Pelton Lane. A Peugeot car had left the carriageway and collided with a lamppost, causing extensive damage.
“The driver of the vehicle left the scene before the arrival of police. Following the collision, the road was closed between Pelton Primary School and South Pelaw while emergency services cleared the carriageway and engineers carried out precautionary safety checks on the gas supply.
“The area was declared safe and the road was reopened at approximately 5pm.”
