An eagle-eyed member of the public helped police track down a stolen BMW before its owners even knew it had gone.
A couple were asleep in their County Durham home when five suspects allegedly broke in through a patio door and took the keys to their car. However, police were called by a witness who noticed some suspicious activity nearby, close to Bishop Auckland Ruby Club.
When officers approached the car they allegedly spotted the car being tampered with
Five men, from the Bradford area, were arrested on suspicion of burglary. They are today being questioned in police custody.
A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: “The owner was not aware it had been stolen just hours earlier during a two-in-one burglary at their home as they slept upstairs. An investigation is ongoing with South Durham Volume Crime. The victim will have his car returned in due course.”
