Eddie Howe told Newcastle United changes he must make to win Carabao Cup final vs Liverpool
Anthony Gordon’s red card has put a spanner in the works for Newcastle United’s preparations for their Carabao Cup final against Liverpool next week – and fans in the Chronicle Live comments section have been busy making their wish-lists for how Eddie Howe should set his side up and give the club the best chance of winning a trophy this season that he possibly can.
Gordon will be suspended for the Wembley final, owing to a shove to the back of Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke in the game that halted their FA Cup progression. The club could have appeal a suspension, but success seemed unlikely and a decision has reportedly been made – so Howe will have to look elsewhere to make a threat good enough to pierce through Liverpool’s defence.
There is one match between now and then, an away game against West Ham, to field-test an alternative plan of attack and give the Magpies a boost during a difficult run of form. Howe has players he can rotate into Gordon’s usual spot, but which one will get the nod – and how that affects the balance of the rest of the team – remains to be seen.
Fans have offered up their own thoughts on what the set-up should look like next Sunday, as reader Tepes says: “Forest play 4-2-3-1 and that worked (twice) against Liverpool. Although we played the same formation against them recently, we should have played Bruno [Guimaraes] instead of Gordon in behind [Alexander] Isak and [Lewis] Miley instead of Bruno as the double pivot with [Sandro] Tonali.
“So now we won’t have Gordon, it makes that choice easier. Play [Harvey] Barnes wide left, Bruno as the No.10 and either Miley or Big Joe [Joelinton] alongside Tonali, shielding the back four. It’s the best shot we’ve got.”
Commenter DurbanSkyslot wants to see change, too: “That is the one problem with Howe, his style of football is not what Newcastle need at this time, and nor does he have the personnel to carry it out. He should be able to change style and formation to suit what players we’ve got, but he still persists with the only thing he knows – his 4-3-3 pressing style – although our squad is far too slow to play that way.”
DukeLeblanc writes: “If the past is prologue, he’ll most likely use his 4-4-2, with the idea that this time it will be more effective with [Callum] Wilson and Isak, as opposed to Wilson and Gordon like we saw at Anfield. He’s been vocal about wanting to play Isak and Wilson together. Question is, will supporters accept a 4-4-2 in the year 2025?”

Chopper13 says: “Go wild. Isak left and [William] Osula right in the front of a 4-4-2. Midfield of Joelinton, Tonali, Guimaraes and Miley… then at any one time we can revert to 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 by Isak moving out left – when Osula drives through the middle – and vice versa. Osula offers energy and unpredictability.”
Jonnythebrave writes: “Barnes is a quality player, but he doesn’t get a game because of Gordon, so now’s the time for him to stake his claim. He can either put in the performances we know he can, and either push Gordon or drum up a bit interest in the summer. At the moment, we would be lucky to recoup £20m and he would likely end up at a bottom half Premier League club. It’s within his power over the next few games now – and Wembley – to showcase himself and change that!”
Tumbla says: “Isak on the left, Wilson through the middle, [Jacob] Murphy on the right and Barnes on the subs bench along with Bruno. Miley, Joelinton and Tonali in the middle and [Martin] Dubravka in goal. As for the back four, [it should be] big Dan [Burn] and then another three.”
