Eminem wants to get in on the rising popularity of the WNBA.
As reported by Sportico, Eminem has joined a group bid to bring a WNBA expansion team to his hometown of Detroit. The bid is being led by the Detroit Pistons and its billionaire owner Tom Gores, according to an anonymous source. Others involved in the bid to bring the WNBA to the Motor City include owners from various sports franchises, such as the Detroit Lions, the Detroit Red Wings, and the Detroit Tigers.
Detroit previously had a WNBA team, the Detroit Shock, from 1998 to 2009. However, the franchise relocated to Tulsa in 2010, and again to Dallas in 2016 when it rebranded to the Dallas Wings. The WNBA is currently engaging in expansion talks and is expected to select at least one city to expand to, although they could reportedly expand to as many as three more cities.
Owners in the NBA have backed various new franchises expected to launch in San Francisco, Toronto, and Portland in the coming years. Getting involved with the WNBA isn’t Eminem’s only venture outside of music, as he launched his Mom’s Spaghetti restaurant in Detroit in 2021.
