Everything we know about The Office spinoff – from cast to filming start date

NBC has announced that they are developing a follow-up series to the US version of hit sitcom The Office, with the new show set to stream on Peacock in the US. It was announced on Wednesday 8 May that Peacock had placed a formal series order for the untitled series, which is set in the same universe as NBC’s former Emmy-winning Steve Carell comedy. The new TV series is set to introduce a new cast of characters “in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper,” according to NBCUniversal Entertainment’s Lisa Katz.

This will be another addition to the massive The Office universe, reports the Mirror US.

The first version of the show was, of course, the British mockumentary television sitcom of the same name, which was first broadcast in the UK between 2001 to 2003. It was created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, with Ricky playing the lead role of David Brent, and featured actors including Martin Freeman and Lucy Davis. The show inspired a slew of international remakes worldwide, but the most popular was the American version starring Steve as Michael Scott.

The series ran for nine seasons on NBC from 2005 to 2013 and had a second life after it began streaming on Netflix. Here’s everything we know about the new untitled spinoff so far.

Domhnall Gleeson, who starred in About Time and Ex-Machina as well as this year’s romantic TV drama Alice & Jack, is teaming up with Sabrina Impacciatore, who wowed audiences in the second season of The White Lotus. They’re headlining an exciting ensemble cast, although the specifics of their characters are hush-hush for now.

Lisa Katz, of NBCUniversal Entertainment, spilled the beans to The Hollywood Reporter about the show’s concept. It’s all happening in The Office US universe we know and love, but this time we’re swapping out Dunder Mifflin’s paper company antics for a behind-the-scenes look at a struggling Midwestern daily newspaper.

“It’s been more than 10 years since the final episode of The Office aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock,” she said. “In partnership with Universal Television and led by the creative team of Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, this new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper.”

The official description for the upcoming series states: “The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.”

The Office’s very own Greg Daniels is teaming up with Nathan for You’s Michael Koman to co-create the new comedy. The executive production team includes Greg and Michael, plus Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant from the original UK version of the series and Howard Klein and Ben Silverman, who worked on the US sitcom.

Greg has previously mentioned that he doesn’t see this new endeavour as a reboot of his 2005 mockumentary classic. Buzz about a potential new sitcom linked to The Office started swirling in January when Greg began brainstorming ideas for a connected series, rather than a reworking of the original.

When can we expect The Office spin-off to hit our screens?

While there’s no confirmed release date yet, the cameras are set to roll this July. The show joins the mockumentary trend at an opportune moment, with Abbott Elementary currently a successful series that owes much to The Office’s format.
