If you head to the South Tyneside coast for a chippy tea, you might well be fighting over the salt and vinegar with a a star from one of the best comedies of all time, a chart-topping pop star, a former First Lady, as a certain restaurant, which is loved by food critics, has also become a huge draw with celebrities.
For years and years now, Colmans in South Shields has been one of the leading lights, not just in the North East, but in the whole of the UK, when it comes to top tier fish and chips; just ask anyone who’s ever queued up outside its Ocean Road branch on Good Friday just how popular it is! Well it’s not just us mere members of the public that can now attest to just how good Colmans is, as the South Tyneside institution has a growing list of big names who’ve come through its doors.
Imagine serving someone from Little Mix one night and then the next you’ve got the wife of a former US President asking for extra mushy peas with her cod and chips. Well that would be nothing out of the ordinary for the staff at Colmans, because, as well as counting now Brit nominated pop icon Jade Thirlwall amongst its most loyal customers, Colmans’ diners in the last few years, also include Hilary Clinton; with the well respected politician, herself an ex presidential candidate, heading there on a visit to South Tyneside in 2022.
The former first lady was in South Shields speaking as a guest of ex-Labour MP David Miliband, who organises an annual lecture in his old constituency. And last month, Gavin & Stacey writer and star, James Colman followed in her footsteps, not by just also giving a lecture, but by tucking into some Colmans fish and chips as well.
In photos shared from the night, James was seen mingling with another of Colmans’ repeat customers from home turf, comedian Chris Ramsey, who attended the invite only event with wife and podcast co-host Rosie.
Other famous faces who are no stranger to Colmans, either at its original Ocean Road home or its stunning Seafood Temple right by the sea, include X Factor winner turned stage star Joe McElderry and ex Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll.
Last year, the Seafood Temple was visited by social media star the Food Review Club, who said he had the ‘best fish and chips of his life’ there, weeks after local singer Jade was seen eating from a box of Colmans fish sad chips in the video for her debut solo single Angel of My Dreams.
