Famous London pub changes its name for cup final as Newcastle fans descend

A pub in London has well and truly nailed its colours to the mast for this weekend, with there no doubt at all who it is backing in the Carabao Cup final, thanks to a big name change in honour of Newcastle United.

After weeks and weeks of counting down, it’s nearly time for Newcastle to take on Liverpool as they bid to end a 70 year wait for a major domestic cup. A near 32,000 United fans will take their seats at Wembley for the final on Sunday, with many more also heading down to the capital without a ticket just to experience what is sure to be a terrific atmosphere.

The party will start for loads of supporters as soon as they step off the train at Kings Cross, if not before; meaning that boozers around the station should be in for a very busy weekend. And one of those is The Dolphin. The pub, just off Euston Road, is a long standing favourite of NUFC fans and is on our list as one of the best pubs in London for them to visit this weekend as well as one of three near Kings Cross to check out.

And The Dolphin has now gone the extra mile to make Magpies feel welcome this weekend as it has changed its name to The Mad Dog & Mags, in honour of both the fans and Eddie Howe’s right hand man Jason Tindall. The new look signage was captured by a united supporter who arrived in London on Friday morning, with the exterior now very aptly beaming in black and white as staff worked on putting the finishing touches to the new look.

The Dolphin will be packed out with Newcastle fans all weekend, with many set to head back there before the train home to (hopefully!) celebrate a famous win over Liverpool at Wembley. Another place that is set to become a sea of black and white on Saturday is Covent Garden, with the famous London landmark this year’s Trafalgar Square, as the decided meeting point for fans on the eve of the final.
