A high street fashion chain is closing stores across the country with four North East branches set to shut their doors for good this weekend.
It was reported last month that Select was planning to close 35 locations permanently by March 15, with the struggling retailer having already shut 12 stores in recent weeks. This means the remaining 23 stores will close by the weekend, leaving behind just 48 Select stores nationwide – compared to 169 stores before its administration in 2019, The Mirror reports.
The cuts will see one Select branch in Northumberland, one in South Tyneside and one in County Durham close their doors for the final time this weekend. Select also operates stores in the Bridges Shopping Centre in Sunderland, in Washington and in Cramlington, but these sites are so far unaffected by the wave of closures.
The news comes as the latest blow to the British high street, with several other big-name retailers having announced more shop closures so far in 2025. Earlier this week, it was reported that Poundland is set to be sold as it struggles to battle an “increasingly challenging” UK retail landscape, leaving some stores at risk of closure.
There are fears that a number of Poundland‘s 825 sites could end up closing their doors after the budget retail giant hired advisory firm Teneo to oversee a sale of the business. It comes after parent company Pepco Group confirmed last week that it was exploring “all strategic options” for Poundland, including a potential sale.
Analysis from the Centre for Retail Research revealed that 13,479 stores, the equivalent of 37 each day, shut for good in 2024 across the UK high street. Among them is Homebase, which confirmed 33 store closures in February after the DIY chain collapsed into administration in November 2024.
The Select stores in Ashington, South Shields, Peterlee and Hartlepool are the North East branches affected. Here is the full list of Select branches set to close this weekend:
