Festive Carols in the Car Park event raises cash to support children with brain tumours this Christmas

A very special festive event saw classmates of little “warrior” Mercy Cuthbertson sing carols as part of a fundraising drive for the charity founded in her name.

Forest Hall tot Mercy, 6, died in May due to a DIPG brain tumour, but during her short life her “mighty fight” with the illness won the hearts of many across the North East. In the weeks after her death, parents Paul and Lorraine set up the Mercy’s Mighty Foundation charity to help other families facing a similarly traumatic diagnosis.

The charity was formally established in August and the “carols in the car park” event is just the latest in a number of fundraisers which have supported its work – which focuses on the children and families who live with similar illnesses to Mercy’s.

Speaking at the event on Tuesday night, Lorraine Cuthbertson told ChronicleLive: “The Wheatsheaf in Benton Square has become a hub for the charity.

“What we do is support other paediatric brain tumour families by raising money, sending children dream boxes, sending families on respite breaks and sending eduational resources as a lot of these chidlren are out of school.”

She said “every single penny” raised would support the charity’s work – and that she was incredibly grateful to support from the community, including from “community champions” at nearby Asda Benton.
