Miguel Almiron’s time at Newcastle United has come to an end, with the winger leaving for familiar surroundings after rejoining MLS club Atlanta United. And following the news of his departure, Newcastle fans in the Chronicle Live comments section have been full of praise for the Paraguayan’s time at the club.
Almiron arrived in January 2019, successfully bridging the gap between the tail-end of Mike Ashley’s ownership and the Saudi takeover. He made 223 appearances for the club, scoring 30 times and played big parts in accomplishments like reaching the League Cup final and a top 4 finish in recent years.
In a statement following the announcement of Almiron’s departure, manager Eddie Howe said: “On behalf of the club, I want to thank Miggy for everything he has given us during our time together. He has been the ultimate professional, and he has been a big part of some of our most memorable moments in recent seasons.
“He is a great person and we’ll miss him greatly, but this is the right move at the right time for him and his family and we wish them well.”
Chronicle Live readers have wished Almiron well, with commenter Tumbla saying: “A minority of know-nowts dwelled only on his weaknesses, never giving the lad credit for what he actually gave and brought to the team. His purple patch couldn’t be maintained but I believe we saw the very best of him during that time.
“Consistency was his downfall but giving an injection of pace, tenacity and intensity whenever he was called upon was Miggy to a tee. Love the lad and can only wish him the best for the rest of his life. Just a good guy.”
GeordieDharma agrees: “Miggy I have loved every game you’ve played in. Even when you couldn’t hit a barn door from 6 yards you never ever gave up trying. Your personality and spirit will always be remembered. Good luck with your new adventures, little gem.”
Hotmog69 says: “Great servant to the club, proper good old-fashioned professional Miggy is and was. If he had been better at finishing off goalscoring opportunities, I’m certain he would have been staying. Always did a job for the team, but he only had one really good season if we’re being honest. But good luck Miggy and you’re an adopted Geordie forevermore.”
Houghton Mag writes: “He and Maxi were shining lights in the dark days under Ashley and Bruce. His exuberance and infectiously upbeat demeanour were loved by the fans. He, like our other cult heroes, will be welcome back any time.”
Alanvanman says: “Great lad, always gave 100%. Good luck to you and your family, come back to see us, good Geordie lad.”
Magdave writes: “Good luck Miggy, and thanks for all your skill and hard work for the team. You were appreciated mate, and won’t be forgotten. All the best for the future young man!”
Spartatoon says: “Good luck lad and thank you for your service throughout the dark days, and for some unforgettable moments last year.”
BigMan2022 adds: “Good luck Miggy. May you go on to score many goals and be a great player for Atalanta once again.”
