The fifth anniversary of the UK going into lockdown for the coronavirus pandemic is approaching.
Lockdown was announced by then Prime Minister Boris Johnson on March 23, 2020 and was initially believed to be for just a few weeks. But the pandemic and lockdown ended up turning into months of turmoil.
Schools and businesses closed, while NHS staff and health professionals were at the forefront of the pandemic. Tragically, thousands of people lost their lives, with their loved ones having to deal with their grief in the most difficult circumstances.
There was heartbreak in the North East’s hospitals and care homes as facilities were closed to visitors and loved ones passed away without their families around them, and there was anger when, just weeks after the first national lockdown was announced, Dominic Cummings flouted the restrictions to travel to Barnard Castle.
In the lead up to the anniversary of the coronavirus lockdown, we are surveying our reader about the pandemic. Do you think going into lockdown was the right thing to do? Did it happen at the right time?
