Flood warnings are in place in the North East due to high tides and rising river levels.
A flood alert for the Tyne and Wear coast is in place this morning. Although high tide was at 8am, the warning remains in place for several hours. The Government warning covers from St Mary’s Lighthouse in Whitley Bay, to Crimdon Park in North Hartlepool.
The warning says: “Flooding is possible 2 hours either side of the high tides. Areas most at risk include beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads.”
This message will be updated by 10am on Monday January 6, or as the situation changes.
There is also a second flood warning in place for Lower River Wear due to overnight rising river levels, with flooding possible until 3pm on Monday. People are advised to take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water.
Areas most at risk include riverside footpaths and low lying land and roads near Houghton Le Spring, the warning states. The message will be updated by 6pm on Monday January 6, or as the situation changes.
A flood alert for Lower River Tees and estuarine tributaries states: “Rising river levels this morning may lead to flooding.
Flooding is possible from 7am until 7pm on 06/01/2025. Areas most at risk include riverside footpaths and low lying land and roads near the Lustrum Beck.”
And a flood warning has been issued for the River Skerne stating : “Rising river levels this morning may lead to flooding. Flooding is possible from 07:00 AM until 07:00 PM on 06/01/2025. Areas most at risk include riverside footpaths and low lying land and roads near Preston-Le-Skerne Weather conditions are expected to improve this afternoon and no further flooding is expected.
“We are closely monitoring rainfall and river levels. Take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water. This message will be updated by 8pm on 06/01/2025, or as the situation changes.”
