British holidaymakers looking to jet off to a popular South African destination are receiving fresh travel guidance from the Foreign Office. Amidst reports of tourists being “targeted” in violent attacks, the FCDO has stepped up with new advice for travellers heading out of the European Union.
Updating on various concerns, the FCDO stated: “Updated information about Table Mountain National Park, wildfires in Cape Town and air travel.”
It added to its cautionary notes: “Some Table Mountain trails are strenuous, and mountain rescuers get regular calls to help hikers.”
To ensure safety, they advise: “Know your limits, research possible trails and select a route suitable to your fitness level. Check SANPARKS for the latest guidance including hazards such as wildfires. Always check the availability of the cable car if you are planning to use it.”

Pointing toward crime-related issues, they mention: “See Crime for information on violent attacks in Table Mountain National Park.”, reports Birmingham Live.
The guidance also references “recent violent attacks and muggings against hikers and foreign tourists in Table Mountain National Park, including on Lion’s Head and Signal Hill”.
Tourists are encouraged to “avoid quieter areas, especially during early mornings and evenings”. In another update, the FCDO relayed: “After a violent attack killed a tourist in the Kruger National Park, SANParks advise against using the Numbi gate. There have been protests and violent incidents on the R538 road leading to the gate.”
Concluding the advice, it was noted: “You can fly directly to Kruger National Park from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Many people also choose to take a private tour or drive overland themselves.”
For those planning to stay outside the park, it’s advised to get in touch with your lodge beforehand to check if any disruptions might impact your visit. As per SANParks news: “If you stay outside the park, contact your lodge in advance to find out if any disruptions will affect your trip. See SANParks news.”
The advisory also includes a caution regarding wildfires, noting their potential occurrence in both rural and urban settings during periods of hot, dry weather – this includes Cape Town and the Table Mountain National Park area. The warning emphasises: “Wildfires can happen in rural and urban areas during hot and dry weather including Cape Town and in the Table Mountain National Park. Follow evacuation orders if requested.”
In case of spotting a wildfire, the guidance is clear: move to a safe location away from vegetation and smoke. If you find yourself inside a building or vehicle and deem it safe to remain, ensure that all vents and windows are shut tight.
The advice states: “If you see a wildfire, move to a safe place away from vegetation and smoke. If you are inside a building or a car and judge it is safe to stay there, close all vents and windows.”
