Full list of places serving food in Durham city ordered to improve hygiene standards by inspectors

There are several restaurants, cafes and takeaways within Durham City centre that ‘must improve’ poor food hygiene standards, according to the most recent set of ratings.

The food hygiene rating is not a guide to food quality but instead provides consumers with clear information on businesses’ hygiene standards at the time they are inspected to help make informed choices.

Usually displayed on the front window of a business, the zero to five ratings are often used as an indication for customers of somewhere new to try, whether it be a restaurant, takeaway or grocery shopping.

The scheme is run in partnership with local authorities, which each year inspect whether food businesses are complying with expected standards and give a rating from zero to five. A zero signifies ‘urgent improvement is required while a five rating shows that hygiene standards are ‘very good’.

When inspected, businesses are assessed on three areas by food safety officers:

  • Hygienic food handling, including preparation, cooking and storage.
  • The cleanliness and condition of facilities and building to ensure ventilation and pest control matters are dealt with to enable good food hygiene.
  • The management of food safety is inspected to ensure the food safety officer is confident standards will be maintained and upheld.

Here are the businesses in Durham city centre currently holding a one or two rating, according to the Foods Standards Agency. No businesses scored a zero while those scoring a two required ‘improvement necessary’ in one category.
