Gavin and Stacey’s Dave Coaches star Steffan Rhodri looks completely different outside of sitcom

There are few characters as iconic as Gavin and Stacey‘s Dave Coaches – who is returning for the BBC sitcom’s final ever episode tonight. The Barry Island coach driver and Nessa’s ex-fiancé will be back in Gavin and Stacey’s Christmas finale, played by Steffan Rhodri.

While Dave Coaches has a distinctive look on the BBC sitcom – actor Steffan looks completely different in real life, as highlighted when the star appeared at the premiere of Gavin and Stacey’s upcoming special. Steffan, 57, appeared at a screening of the Gavin and Stacey on Wednesday 18 December, wearing a blue shirt and grey blazer with thick-rimmed black glasses. Missing Dave’s classic facial hair, Steffan looked worlds away from the classic sitcom character.

It’s not the first time that fans have been shocked by how different Steffan looks in other roles. House of the Dragon viewers were left gobsmacked when they spotted Steffan in the HBO series, which airs on Sky Atlantic in the UK.

The actor plays Ser Hobert Hightower, brother to the Hand of the King, Ser Otto Hightower. Viewers quickly recognised Hobert as Steffan and took to Twitter to share their surprise, with one writing: “I can forgive Rhys Ifans, but why didn’t they let Dave Coaches speak in his Welsh accent in House of the Dragon,” while another penned: “F**k off is Dave Coaches in House of Dragons hahahaha.”

A third fan chimed in: “Dave Coaches in House of the Dragon? I bloody love it,” and another added: “Just realised they’ve got Dave from Dave’s Coaches in House of the Dragon.”

Fans are weighing in on the trend of familiar faces popping up in epic fantasy series, with one viewer remarking, “This is the issue with everyone and their dog ending up in these big fantasy franchises,” and noting that it can be hard to see actors beyond their iconic roles. Another fan expressed delight: “One of my favourite bits of House of the Dragon is that Dave Coaches from Gavin and Stacey is in it.”

Steffan Rhodri, who played Dave Coaches, has an impressive acting portfolio including parts in ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ and ‘Wonder Woman’. Earlier this year, the cast of Gavin and Stacey were spotted filming what appeared to be wedding scenes, with the likes of James Corden, Mathew Horne and Alison Steadman in formalwear on the set of the upcoming final BBC episode.
