Hairy Biker Si King has spoken of his love for the passionate people of the North East and the “excellent” Sheepfolds Stables in Sunderland.
The beloved TV cook launched PROPA! at the city’s newest venue in December, a venture which champions local produce and excels at the British classics – including unbelievable pies. It’s so far been hugely popular and on Sunday it held its first ever food market.
Recently, Si also appeared on the Local Heroes podcast, a show hosted by Chris Jewitt and Dan Prince, which delves into guests’ love of food. It champions the region, local culture and heritage and takes guests “back to the kitchen table”.
During the show, Si spoke of how he became involved in Sheepfolds Sunderland and explained how there are similarities between those of us in the North East and Italians. “Sheepfolds is excellent”, Si said. “It’s excellent in its execution, excellent in its design, excellent in its character and personality and it needs love, care and attention to bring it to life. The pursuit of quality doesn’t stop.

“We have talented chefs, good lads with a great mindset. We are custodians of nostalgia…what we’re trying to deliver is exactly that. We want you to have this moment where you say ‘this is just like my gran’s’ or ‘this is what my gran used to make’. What’s important about food for me is those moments.”
Si, who was born in Kibblesworth, near Gateshead, talked at length about how food is a “universal language” and how he sees similarities between the Italians and those of us in the North East. He said: “It’s much the same as the Italians. The Italians aren’t Italians. They’re Pugliese, Toscano, Abruzzese, they’re from their region and the very essence of who they are is delivered and spoken about through their cuisine.”
Si added: “What’s great about the North East is, it’s in a fantastic location. It’s our characters and personalities, we don’t take ourselves too seriously, which is sometimes to our detriment, but it’s just the way we’re made.
“We’re adventurous, creative, [and] we are absolutely passionate about what we do and the way we interact with each other [and how] we welcome visitors. Those are the sorts of things that make us.”
