Having fun on a Bigg Night Out in Newcastle in March 2009

Welcome back to the Newcastle of 2009 as this week’s pick of archive images revive memories of party nights out in the city in the March of that year.

These 10 scenes, snapped by our Chronicle photographers, when they were out and around the city centre and Bigg Market area, originally appeared as part of the popular Bigg Night Out series which ran in the papers between 1992 and 2012. And, although they were taken 16 years ago, many of them could be from now, with similar scenes – even similar clothes – being seen today.

Back in that March, Kelly Clarkson’s My Life Would Suck Without You was in the charts along with the likes of Flo Rida’s Right Round. At the cinema, Marley & Me was a biggie.

Looking at the wider picture, 2009 was the year that swine flu spread to the UK while locally the late Queen came to Newcastle to reopen the former Hancock Museum as the Great North Museum: Hancock.
