Historic Northumberland town rated ‘best place’ to live in the North East in UK rankings

A historic town in Northumberland has seen off some of its bigger neighbours from across the region, to be the highest placed North East location on a huge list of the best places to live in the whole UK.

We know here at ChronicleLive that the North East is a placed blessed with an abundance of fantastic places to call home and there are two places from our patch that have made it into the top 100 of a list of 1,429 destinations in a list compiled by Garrington Property Finders. And the new list makes particularly good reading for Alnwick, with the popular town finishing in 34th position in the guide, ahead of nearest North East rival Whitley Bay, which crept into the top 80 at number 78.

The next highest finisher in the list is Newcastle in 128th, but it’s most definitely Alnwick that can claim bragging rights for the North East, with the Garrington stats revealing that the average house price in the town is £330,000, £100k less than the price to get a property in next nearest North East location Whitley Bay.

No stranger to national acclaim, just last month Alnwick made the top 5 of the best places for solo travellers to visit in 2025, with Alnwick Castle also in a guide of the top film locations to get to by train and named as one of the most beautiful castles in the UK. And it’s no surprise, as, as well as being used for some famous scenes in Harry Potter, including the flying lesson scene in the Philosopher’s Stone, the castle has also been used for two series of hit ITV period drama Downton Abbey.

The castle isn’t the only reason to visit Alnwick either, as it is the perfect base to discover Northumberland and all its stunning landscapes and coastline, with the town also having one of the best book shops in the whole country, Barter Books, complete with its ‘secret cafe’; not far from a dedicated Harry Potter store that opened up last year.
